Star Trek Reboot fans on my flist, go read this fic immediately.

It's about two South Asian members of Starfleet talking about how strange it is that Westerners get assigned all the exciting missions and nepotism still totally counts (*cough*Kirk*cough*) and the computers still don't recognize non-Western English accents (as poor Chekov can relate). And the author is totally spot-on, guys. Star Trek is supposed to be all post-racial and stuff, right, but why does the bridge still smell of tokenism and where are all the brown people anyway?

Last night at Asian American Journalists we had an AA Studies professor give a talk and we learned
1) Indians are the fastest growing group of Asian immigrants to the US and
2) 60% of them have a bachelor's degree or better, which manages to beat even the infamous Chinese/Japanese (50%) and of course are double the next highest college-educated group, whites (30%).

This is census data from 1990. Don't you think by the year 2387 we'd have a better distribution on the Enterprise than one black, one East Asian and everyone else a white American or European? (Also, all Vulcans are white. Space elves in space.)

I know that the producers of the original series were hugely, hugely progressive in 1960s America but sadly the strictures they were under are still evident in the casting for 2009 Reboot.

Argh, writer's block. Argh, argh, argh.

And now I really, really want to read slash fic featuring Chris Pine's Kirk and Zachary Quinto's Spock. Impulsive physicality throwing himself at impassive intellectuality. Fuck, the scene where Kirk gets right up to Spock (kissing distance, natch) and ruthlessly provokes him to "emotional compromise" and unleashes the inner rage in Mr. Pointy-Ears and Spock surges at Kirk...well, I shivered.

I may be beyond all hope of recovery.
